Six Bad Driving Habits To Avoid
If we are going to be honest with ourselves, most of us have slipped into some bad habits on the road. We need to remember other people’s lives are at stake if we get into an accident.
Here are some bad habits to avoid the next time you step into your car:
1. Not wearing a seat belt
It seems hard to believe, but according to WHSV, 16% of Virginians still don’t wear their seat belts. Research shows most people killed in car crashes were not wearing restraints. You may not be comfortable wearing a seat belt, but your family and friends would be devastated if you died in an accident. Don’t be selfish, and wear your seat belt!
2. Looking down at your phone while driving
Most drivers are guilty of this, but it needs to stop. Looking down at your phone even for one second is all it takes to get into an accident. The next time you decide to reach for your phone to skip to the next song on Pandora, make the choice to leave the phone in your seat . It is not worth risking the lives of others or yourself just so you can listen to your favorite song at that moment. Purchase a cell phone mount so you can keep your eyes on the road.
3. Rolling through a stop sign
You should never assume no one is coming when you arrive at a stop sign. Someone could be speeding around the corner, or there could be a police officer or camera watching to make sure you stop.
4. Not using turn signals
It is recommended to signal at least 100 ft before you change lanes or turn. This gives other drivers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians ample notice of your next move.
5. Running a red or yellow light
Slow down at a yellow light if you can. Speeding up to beat a yellow light is dangerous and can lead to a crash. Running red lights increases your risk of a crash.
6. Speeding
Are you really going to save that much time speeding to work? Probably not. If you travel for work and you are not sure what the speed limit is, the GPS knows the speed limit for most roads.
