9 Things to Look For When Buying a Used Car

Auto Insurance

With the increasing cost of new automobiles, more and more consumers are looking to used cars when making an automobile purchase. When buying a used car, it is important to do your research before making a purchase to avoid unexpected repairs after the transaction is completed. Here are nine things to look for when buying a used car:

1. Reviewing the CARFAX Report

A CARFAX or vehicle history report tells everything you need to know about the history of the car. Dealers sell these reports, or you can purchase them online too. You will see accident history, ownership transfers, or title problems.

2. Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

As more buyers turn to used vehicles, certified pre-owned dealers are becoming more common. These are typically automobiles which have been reviewed by the shop before going on the lot. The cars may also have warranties beyond the new car warranty.

3. Leaks

The best time to check for leaks is during the test drive. Take the automobile to a paved parking lot in an area with no fluids on the pavement. Let the car run for several minutes, and see if you see black, green, or pink fluid leaking underneath the car. Leaking oil will be black, antifreeze will be green, and transmission fluid will have a pink tint.

4. Buyer’s Inspection

Some mechanics offer a buyer’s inspection where you can have a certified technician look over the car prior to making a purchase. They will be able to see if there are any issues the untrained eye wouldn’t notice about a used car.

5. Reading Reviews on the Make and Model

Use car review websites to do some research on the automobile. Websites like Car Complaints give you an idea about some of the common issues for the specific year, make, and model of your vehicle. Consumer Reports is well known for their car reviews. You can pick up one of their car magazine review reports at the bookstore, or you can look at their reviews through their paid membership.

6. Examine the Car’s Exterior

For some used vehicles, paint peeling is a known issue. You really want to check for rust under the automobile. Cars which were driven in northern states tend to have more rust issues due to the salt and chemicals applied to the roads during the winter season. If you are trying to get a good deal, a car with some cosmetic issues will be valued less. Look to see how well previous repairs were completed. If the repairs are hard to spot, it shouldn’t affect the value of the car much.

7. Examine the Vehicle’s Interior

The interior of the automobile will also affect the value. Look closely at the upholstery. If the car has strong air fresheners, they might be trying to mask unpleasant odors from pet urine or other foul odor.

8. Review Car Values

Kelly Blue Book is a vital resource when car shopping. It will tell you how much to expect to pay for the vehicle you are evaluating.

9. Car Insurance Rates

Many shoppers forget to consider the insurance rates they will pay on a new or used car. You should request a quote from your insurance agent to find out what your premiums would be for the year, make, and model of the car.
